Understanding the microbiome

The microbiome of humans and animals exists on all body surfaces, including the mouth, intestines, vagina, skin, and eyes. While it is predominantly composed of bacteria, it also contains fungi, yeasts, and viruses. On average, a person hosts more than 30 trillion bacterial cells — most of them residing in the large intestine. Each individual’s microbiome is unique, shaped by a distinctive combination of microorganisms.
